5 Reasons Having Goals & Intentions Can Make You Happier

Have you been disillusioned by goals? Maybe you've set them in the past but failed to achieve them? I have too, but now I'm firmly in Team Goals Rock because goals can make you happier! Here are 5 reasons why.

In this post: how having goals & intentions can make you happier and why you should set yourself some goals to work towards.

I must admit to having a bit of a love/hate relationship with goals & intentions.

I LOVE planning things out and the idea of making a plan to achieve my goals & dreams has always been attractive to me BUT I’ve also felt the disappointment (usually at myself!) that comes when I haven’t put those plans into action and my dreams have fallen by the wayside.

Then it can just feel like a massive waste of time…

Can you relate??

There are a lot of reasons why you might not want to set any goals for yourself:

😖 You might have tried goal setting in the past only to have not reached your target and felt like a failure.

😏 Perhaps you are just so busy with your life as it currently is that you can’t imagine adding anything else into the mix.

😔 Maybe you’re burnt out or depressed and can’t see the point of thinking about the future… Isn’t it enough that you are just making it through the day (by the way – yes, that is enough – but having goals might help you get out of that place).

I hear you, girl.  I’ve felt all of these at some point in my past.  I’ve had to work through some major resistance to setting goals, but nowadays I am a proud supporter of the #goalsrock squad.

And, to be honest, it’s not even that I have great success at reaching the goals I set, but I know that I have achieved more in my life from working towards goals I have set for myself, than if I hadn’t set any at all.

As an added bonus, having goals has made me happier and while I don’t think having goals to work towards is necessarily essential to your happiness, I believe they can certainly help you in your journey towards a happier life.

Here are 5 reasons having goals can make you happier:

They give you hope

This was a big one for me when I was battling depression.  I didn’t feel like there was anything to look forwards to in life, everything was dull and painful and seemed like it would stay that way.

It was like I had a pair of dirty grey coloured glasses on instead of the cliche “rose coloured glasses“!

When I decided to give goals another try, I allowed myself to think of a different world.  One where difficult situations were improved and I saw the potential there was around me. Viewing the world this way, I started to find hope again.

They increase your sense of purpose

Having a goal means that you have a target to aim for and this helps to give you a sense of purpose.

By having a sense of purpose, you:

  • Avoid feeling like you don’t have anything to strive for;
  • Can check-in with your purpose when making decisions about how to spend your time or other resources;
  • Gain more meaning from life as you hit milestones on the way to your target goal.
They increase your motivation levels

Imagine you have dreamt up a wonderful goal that you are hungry to achieve.

What is the next thing you naturally feel like doing?  Taking action towards your goal.

If you can keep thoughts of your goal front and centre of your mind, and what it will be like when you achieve it, then you will find a source of motivation for taking action and making progress.

This is a powerful thing in life when often we feel unmotivated and disheartened, or if we have a tendency to make excuses for not taking action.

You can map out what you want to achieve in your life

Having goals gives you the tools you need to direct your life.

You can use them to achieve various milestones or plan out where you want to go in life.

Things might not always go perfectly to plan (okay spoiler alert: they aren’t going to go perfectly to plan), but you have a much better chance of getting there when you’ve crafted out a plan beforehand.

You can use them to become the best version of yourself

We rarely become the best version of ourselves if we don’t put in any effort into our lives.

Going with the flow can be nice for a while, but it’s living with intention that will see you really thriving.  Even if it’s a simple as trying to be the best as you can be with where you already are in life.

Setting and then striving for meaningful goals helps us to grow and develop ourselves to become our best selves and live our best lives.

Even when we fall short of our goals or they take longer than expected, we often experience a wealth of self-growth just from the journey alone.

To recap, the 5 ways that having goals & intentions can make you happier are:

  1. They give you hope
  2. They increase your sense of purpose
  3. They increase your motivation levels
  4. You can map out what you want to achieve in your life
  5. You can use them to become the best version of yourself

I hope this post has shown you that it is worthwhile having meaningful goals in your life and how having goals can make you happier.
